What is an SSI Specialty?
A specialty course is a follow-up course focusing on a specific aspect of diving. It can involve knowledge, new skills, or learning to dive with equipment beyond the basic kit. You deepen the theory and in most cases practise directly in open water — in the Grevelingenmeer or the Oosterschelde, depending on the specialty.
At Dive School de Grevelingen we offer a range of SSI specialties, so you can choose a direction that suits your interests and the dives ahead. Diving frequently in Zeeland or the Netherlands? Consider a dry suit course, learning to handle tidal currents, or improving your underwater navigation. Planning a holiday or a liveaboard? Go for boat diving, deep diving and nitrox. Not yet sure what suits you? The Advanced Open Water Diver course is a great starting point — you'll experience five different specialties, including deep diving and underwater navigation, and increase your maximum depth from 18 to 30 metres.
We guide you with a maximum of two students per instructor, so you actually learn, can ask questions, and work at your own pace. All specialties include full equipment rental, including any additional specialist gear needed. Only for the dry suit specialty is it helpful to have your own suit.
Combine with your AOWD
Taking the AOWD course? Add one or more specialties! Every AOWD dive counts as the first dive of the corresponding specialty, so you can earn full specialty certifications efficiently and at a great price. Think about Underwater Navigation, Nitrox or Night Diving.

Frequently asked questions
Which SSI specialty courses does diving school de Grevelingen offer?
Dive School de Grevelingen offers a range of specialties that allow you to greatly expand your knowledge and skills. This will unlock more dive sites and new diving adventures. Check our price list or the specialties overview page for the full range. Would you like to do a specialty we do not (yet) offer? Feel free to let us know and we'll gladly see what we can do for you.
What is an SSI specialty course?
An SSI specialty course focuses on a specific part of diving. This may involve knowledge (such as the Nitrox, Computer Diving or Ecology Specialties), learning new skills (such as navigation, deep diving or drift diving) or becoming proficient in handling specific equipment (such as dry suit diving). You delve into theory and practice skills directly in the water - in the Grevelingen or Oosterschelde, depending on the specialty. Each specialty earns you an internationally recognised SSI licence.
Can I combine a specialty with the Advanced Open Water Diver course?
Yes. Each of the five dives of the AOWD course can be used as one of the required dives of the corresponding specialty. By combining a specialty with the AOWD, you get several certifications in one course. This is efficient and economical. Consider combining AOWD with the specialty Nitrox, Navigation or Perfect Buoyancy.
What is the most popular specialty at Diving School de Grevelingen?
Nitrox (Enriched Air Nitrox) is the most frequently chosen specialty. Diving with nitrox usually gives you longer no-decompression limits and shorter surface intervals or allows you to dive more conservatively (i.e. more safely). The nitrox specialty can be combined easily with all other courses and even guided dives.
What does a specialty course at Diving School de Grevelingen cost?
For the current overview of the prices of our specialties, please check the price list. Included in the price is the use of full diving equipment, including any extra equipment needed. Only in the case of the dry suit specialty is it useful to have your own suit, as we only have a few suits available, which might not be your size.
Is the Blue Oceans course free?
Yes. The SSI Blue Oceans course is free with every SSI certification you obtain at Dive School de Grevelingen. The lessons are available in your online SSI profile. Blue Oceans focuses on awareness and contributing to healthy oceans.
How many students per instructor are there on a specialty course?
A maximum of two students per instructor in open water. This means you learn effectively and have plenty of room for questions and personal guidance.
What certification do I need to take a specialty?
Most specialties require a minimum of an SSI Open Water Diver certification or equivalent. The exact requirements are listed on each specialty's individual page.
What is the SSI Master Diver certification?
The SSI Master Diver certification (not to be confused with Divemaster) is the highest recognition for recreational divers that SSI gives. You get this recognition when you have proven you have a serious amount of experience and skills. The certification is automatically awarded when you have achieved the following: a minimum of 50 logged dives (verified by an SSI Pro), Diver Stress & Rescue and Deep Diving specialties, three additional specialties of your choice. Feel free discuss your interest in this certification with us. We will be happy to see what suits you and how you can acquire the recognition. Do you already have specialties from other diving organisations? You're allowed to include max two specialties from other organizations for the SSI Master Diver recognition.
