Why we choose SSI
International recognition, a certificate valid for life, fully digital learning
SSI: diving the way it should be
SSI — Scuba Schools International — was founded in 1970 and operates a network of more than 4,000 training centres in more than 150 countries. Your certification is recognised everywhere in the world: the Red Sea, the Maldives, the Caribbean — everywhere.
SSI uses a digital learning platform: theory via the SSI app, at your own pace, on your own device. You pay once for course materials and have lifetime access. No paper books to lose, no expiring certifications.

SSI vs. other organisations
All major dive organisations (SSI, PADI, NAUI, CMAS) issue international, lifetime valid certifications. They are mutually recognised through the WRSTC framework — switching is always possible.
Our preference for SSI is based on its digital infrastructure, course range and network quality. If you already hold a certification from another organisation, you are welcome to join our courses.
Already certified with another organisation?
No problem. All major certifications (PADI, NAUI, CMAS, etc.) are mutually recognised. You can join our courses at the equivalent level.
Contact usThe SSI Diver Diamond
SSI bases its training system on six elements that together make a complete diver. Together they form the Diver Diamond.
Knowledge
Diving starts with understanding. Why does a current behave the way it does? What does nitrogen do to your body? How do you navigate your way back to your entry point? Through SSI's online learning materials, you build that knowledge at your own pace, at home, before you ever get in the water. During the course, we deepen everything you have learnt together — not as theory for an exam, but as the foundation for every dive you make afterwards.
Skills
A skilled diver is not recognisable by their equipment, but by the way they move. Effortlessly, calmly, without touching the bottom or disturbing marine life. SSI uses repetition as a teaching method: skills are first introduced in their simplest form, then gradually made more complex as you demonstrate confidence with the basics. That way you build genuine muscle memory, not just techniques you forget the moment the nerves kick in.
Equipment
Dive equipment is your life support underwater. It is worth understanding what you are wearing and why. During the course, you learn each component: what it does, how to check it and how to fit it to your body. Personally-owned, well-fitted equipment makes diving more comfortable and more safe. We are happy to guide you through the options, without any pressure to buy.
Experience
Knowledge and skills are a starting point. Experience is what comes next. Every dive sharpens your senses: you learn to read the conditions, recognise what lives around you and move more fluidly through the water. At Dive School de Grevelingen, we dive with a maximum of two students per instructor, so you can build experience at your own pace. Once you are certified, our guided dives are the natural next step to keep developing.
Responsibility
Once you are certified, your own safety is in your hands. That may sound daunting, but it is exactly what makes diving so rewarding: you learn to act consciously, assess situations and look out for yourself and your buddy. SSI summarises this in the Responsible Diver Code, which you sign as part of your training. A commitment to yourself, your buddy and the underwater world.
Environment
As a diver, you are a guest in an ecosystem that existed long before humans arrived. The Grevelingenmeer and the Oosterschelde estuary are Natura 2000-protected areas: remarkable, fragile and well worth protecting. Good diving means leaving as little trace as possible. Through the SSI Blue Oceans programme, you learn more about the pressures our waters face and how you as a diver can make a genuine contribution.
