Become a Dive Pro
From fun diver to professional - a step by step approach.
From diver to dive professional
The SSI Dive Pro path takes you from motivated recreational diver to recognised professional — as Dive Guide, Divemaster or Open Water Instructor.
Whether you want to guide other divers as a serious hobby or turn it into a profession, the SSI professional pathway offers a clear structure. Each level builds on the previous one, giving you increasing freedom and responsibility underwater.
At Dive School de Grevelingen we train you up to and including Divemaster. For the step towards Open Water Instructor we work together with specialist SSI training centres. We are happy to help you on your way and introduce you to the right contacts.
The Dive Pro path
Diver Stress & Rescue
Before you can start any SSI professional training, a valid SSI Diver Stress & Rescue certification — or an equivalent rescue certification from another recognised organisation — is required. This certification shows that you can recognise emergency situations and know how to act.
The course combines theory, land-based exercises and realistic water scenarios. To complete the course you need a valid first aid, CPR and oxygen administration certificate beforehand — the SSI React Right course is an excellent preparation for this.
- ✓ Required for every SSI professional level
- ✓ Recognise, prevent and resolve emergency situations
- ✓ Prerequisite: first aid, CPR and oxygen administration (e.g. via SSI React Right)
Dive Guide
As a Dive Guide you may escort other certified divers at familiar dive sites during non-commercial dives — in other words, guiding others in a private setting. You learn to manage groups safely, monitor dive safety and deal with unexpected situations.
The Dive Guide course is the starting point of your professional diving career. You deepen your knowledge of diving theory, safety and the underwater environment, and learn how to lead by example.
- ✓ Requirements: 40 logged dives + Diver Stress & Rescue, demonstrable experience with deep diving, night diving and underwater navigation
- ✓ Minimum age 15 years
- ✓ Approx. 35–45 hours of training, including 8 open water sessions
- ✓ 50 logged dives (32 hours or more) required for certification
- ✓ Escort certified divers in private settings
Divemaster
The Divemaster level allows you to escort divers in a professional setting and assist with certain recreational programmes. You receive the Divemaster certification as soon as you have completed both the Dive Guide certification and the Science of Diving specialty, and meet SSI's requirements for active status.
As a Divemaster you may independently escort certified divers and support instructors during SSI courses. Divemaster is the highest level we offer ourselves at Dive School de Grevelingen.
- ✓ First professional level
- ✓ 60 logged dives (40 hours or more) required for certification
- ✓ Awarded automatically after Dive Guide + Science of Diving + active status
- ✓ Minimum age 18 years
- ✓ Independently escort certified divers
- ✓ Support instructors during SSI courses
Open Water Instructor
As an Open Water Instructor you independently teach SSI courses to beginners and to certified divers who want to advance further. As an instructor you directly contribute to the safety and enjoyment of new divers — a responsible and rewarding role.
The step towards Open Water Instructor is taken through an Instructor Training Course (ITC) at a recognised SSI training centre. Dive School de Grevelingen does not offer the instructor training itself. We work with partner dive schools for this. Get in touch with us — we are happy to connect you with the right partner.
Already a dive instructor with another organisation and considering a switch to SSI? A cross-over is usually possible. This does require completing a full Instructor Evaluation (IE). Get in touch to find out more.
- ✓ Requirement: SSI Divemaster certification (or equivalent from a recognised organisation)
- ✓ Cross-over from another organisation possible
- ✓ Via Instructor Training Course (ITC) at an SSI training centre
- ✓ Independently teach beginner and advanced SSI courses

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Dive Guide and Divemaster?
The short answer: Dive Guide is a course, Divemaster is a status. The Dive Guide course is the basic course for anyone who wants to learn how to guide other divers. This can also be recreational (i.e. private and not as a paid job for a diving school or dive centre). Divemaster is the first professional level at SSI, which also allows you to work in the diving industry. You will have completed the Science of Diving specialty in addition to the Dive Guide course, have logged at least 60 dives and meet the requirements for active status as an SSI Dive Pro.
Why is the Diver Stress & Rescue certification required?
During the SSI Diver Stress & Rescue Diver course, you will learn how to recognise and solve problems in yourself. The course combines theory, dry exercises and realistic water scenarios. This certification shows that you recognise emergency situations and know how to act. As a dive professional, these are basic requirements for creating a safe environment for students and divers under your responsibility.
What are the requirements to participate in the Dive Guide course?
To start SSI Dive Guide, you must be at least 15 years old and have logged 40 dives (a total of 25 hours underwater). You also need the Diver Stress & Rescue certification (or similar from another organisation). In addition, you need to have the Deep Diving, Underwater Navigation and Night Diving specialties (or similar from another organisation), or be able to demonstrate that you have sufficient experience in these areas (e.g. by being able to show at least five logged dives from each topic).
To be certified as a Dive Guide, you must have completed the course, successfully pass the exam and have a minimum of 50 logged dives (at least 32 hours underwater).
What do you need to fulfil to become a Divemaster?
To become an SSI Divemaster, you must first have passed the Dive Guide course. In addition, you must be at least 18 years old and have logged a minimum of 60 verified dives (at least 40 hours underwater). You also need the Science of Diving certification and must meet the requirements for active status with SSI.
What are the requirements for active status with SSI?
To gain active status as a Dive Pro with SSI (from the Divemaster level upwards), you must be associated with an approved SSI Training Centre, have professional liability insurance, have paid SSI's annual membership and signed the SSI Professional's Agreement. If you are associated with a training centre, in many cases you will be covered by the centre's insurance and will not need to arrange this yourself.
What is a diving instructor allowed to do more than a divemaster?
The major difference between a Divemaster and Dive Instructor is that an instructor is trained to teach divers new skills. A divemaster may assist in specific programmes and repeat skills learned. So a divemaster is someone who guides, is (also) responsible for safety and logistics and assists. A diving instructor may teach full course programmes and teach students new skills and knowledge. In the Netherlands, it is also the case that only a diving instructor is allowed to give introductory dives.
What is the SSI Master Diver certification?
The SSI Master Diver certification (not to be confused with Divemaster) is the highest recognition for recreational divers that SSI gives. You get this recognition when you have proven you have a serious amount of experience and skills. The certification is automatically awarded when you have achieved the following: a minimum of 50 logged dives (verified by an SSI Pro), Diver Stress & Rescue and Deep Diving specialties, three additional specialties of your choice. Feel free discuss your interest in this certification with us. We will be happy to see what suits you and how you can acquire the recognition. Do you already have specialties from other diving organisations? You're allowed to include max two specialties from other organizations for the SSI Master Diver recognition.
